Your birds may be overcrowded.
Egg laying doesn't usually start until 5-10 months depending on the breed.
Your birds are old enough to determine gender. Please feel free to take pictures of birds free standing, one per image and we can let you know.
Please post pictures of your setup along with the dimensions. Very often newbies grossly under size housing based on what the literature states and birds become stressed.
Being new to chickens, you would not know what to look for if a bird was ill. I'm sorry you lost one.
What exactly are you feeding your flock?
 
The eye could have been pecked after it had died. Unfortunately losing a chick now and then is like losing people. Some of us just didn't make it for what ever reason. When we walk thru old cemeteries there are a lot of those infant graves. I hate losing small chicks but I have come to accept it like it or not. I wish I had a better answer. I Lost one about that age yesterday too.
