I'm a first-time 2-legged animal raiser. My fiancee and I finally bought a house with plenty of land and I was looking forward to getting some new animals.

My furry family includes 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 New Hampshire Red, 2 mystery chicks (a friend asked if she could get two and house them with ours), and 2 Pekins.

They just got moved out to their coop last weekend and it's fun watching them explore. I think my first real chore will be to figure out roosters from hens.

Anyways, as a newbie, I know I'm going to need some help along the way! This place seems like a great place full of people willing to help. :)

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, this is the place to be when you own poultry! We are just bursting at the seams with knowledge!

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Thank you for the warm welcomes! I have actually seen some of your threads and articles when googling questions, so I thought I should sign up and get some more personalized help! I think I may end up with 2 roosters out of my 5 chickens, so I am going to have questions on how to deal with that for sure! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction to check out those articles TwoCrows!

You can post pics in the What Breed and Gender section if you have some suspicious looking pullets that could turn into cockerels

Thank you TwoCrows. I will have to try to get them to cooperate for some good pictures today. They're not particularly friendly - they haven't been handled a lot. I hope it's not too late to change that!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Even older chicks will tame down when they figure out you bring the food/treats, there are several nice articles on socializing taming chicks in the Learning Center TwoCrows linked for you.
