Hi everyone!

Totally new to chickens!!! We've been chicken parents for about 3 weeks now. Got 4 chicks and a Hen off a lady down the road. I have absolutely no idea what Breed and am actually starting to worry that there may be one or two roosters in there lol ... I'm on 2 acres, but don't really think a rooster would be appreciated where I am (... but that might be a different post lol). My girls are absolutely in love with our new additions. And my goodness I never realised what time wasters they can be? I find myself watching them for ages - and all the antics they get up to. I gave them yogurt last week for the first time - simple things like watching them eat that crack me up! Or watching them go nuts over a giant worm I found lol... they went so crazy, I ended up having to go dig up more worms so they each had one. The Hen is just awesome, so protective. This morning I could hear her squawking her head off and went out there and there was a magpie hanging around and trying to get into the coop. Baby chicks were hiding under the nesting box area and mum was NOT happy! I managed to give them some banana and calm her down and she forgot all about it lol ... Anyway, thought I'd add a few happy snaps!!!!! We have Gertrude (mumma chicken), Henrietta, Chickalena (who from another mumma), Maisy and Chicky-Cluck-Cluck ... yes.. my 7 and 4 year old daughters named the babies lol

Welcome to BYC!

What a nice intro, and loved your photos. Nice that everyone is enjoying the chickens, it sounds like they have found a good home. Chicken tv is the best show around!

If you would like some help identifying the breeds, you can post photos over on this link and the experts will help you out:

Please don't shoot the messenger but, I think the bird in first photo is a cockerel, and also the beautifully colored chick in last photo. I am no expert and I am going mainly by combs. Actually I have never seen a comb like the first bird has. But it just says "boy" to me. Please don't take what I say as gospel. Let others offer an opinion. You can post photos at "what breed or gender is this." Individual photos are best, and please note their age at the time you took them. Welcome to Backyard chickens. I hope I am wrong, most people are NOT happy to have males.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.
