I found all you wonderful chicken people a couple weeks ago. I live on a farm, horse farm and this is my first experience raising chickens. A friend of mine raises chickens and that is where my chicks came from. I have 2 Orpingtons, 2 Blue Orpingtons, 2 Black Polish, 2 Cochin, 2 Brahmas and 2 Easter Eggers. My husband has been working on a coop/run for me. We went with a large one made from arched cattle panels covered with hardware cloth and a nice sturdy frame made from 2x4's and 4x4's. The door that he us making for the front is tall enough to walk through without having to bend over. He is extending the hardware cloth past the base about 8" to keep predators from digging under. My question is: I want a separate coop attached to this even though half of it will be tarped. I think chickens need an enclosed coop. I have looked at sooooooo many plans that I am dreaming about chicken coops. I don't want anything prefab. I have a rather large long dresser and armoire sitting in my garage that I would like to somehow connect the two to make a coop. The dresser has a middle section with two doors that open with sliding drawers inside. I planned to take apart the drawers themselves and make nesting boxes of of the wood. The other drawers I would like to use for the same purpose and replace the drawer with hardware cloth or chicken wire. The armoire is also large with the top half being completely open with two doors. I would like to leave the doors but put wire over that opening also. Connecting the two in some way is where I am really at s standstill. Any ideas would be much appreciated and if anything I am doing so far is not a good idea, please let me know. I am also going to use some sort of siding and pitched roof on along with adequate ventilation holes. Thank you all! I love this site!
