Been lurking in the weeds for a bit now, figured it was time to stick my head out...

There seems to be a WEALTH of information on this site! I'm not above stealing ideas and I intend to do exactly that!!

No chicks right now, but we plan on "starting with" some Buff Orpingtons. From there... who knows? We think we want to get "day olds", so I've been looking at some of the designs on here 'cause I'll be putting together a brooder, then I've got to get a coop secured for them. I already have a little building to use. I'm concerned about securing their area 'cause we have both bobcats and coyotes nearby, so I'll be studying what other folks have done about predator control, too.

I haven't completely dismissed the thought of hatching our own, yet, but I feel like that would be jumping in some pretty deep water right off, so I think I'm leaning towards "day olds" first, then I'll try hatching later!

All we have in our household now is an 18 month old Yorkie; he rules the roost at 3.9 pounds!! In the past we've kept some Muskovies and loads of bunnies; from some "Mini-Lops" to "Newfoundland Giants", as well as a few other small animals like lambs and hogs.

I'm sure we will have plenty of questions as we get into this new venture and, from what I've read, THIS will be the place to get answers! We are looking forward to talking with you-all. Thanks in advance!

John

from middle TN! You are being smart to do your research before getting your chickens. Get your coop and run planned out now...so much easier if it is done before you get your chicks. I started with 3 day olds before I had a run or coop. I thought I had plenty of time to build what I needed. I started out with 12, thinking I would lose a few, but I didn't lose any. I forgot how fast those little buggers grow! So, suddenly, I had to build a run! then I built a coop. Worked out ok, but not the smartest way to go about it, so do your research, planning, and building now! Oh yeah, don't forget to build bigger than you think you will need...you will need it!
