Hi I’m Alexandria Jean Maglione.
My parents didn’t know my last name is Italian for the word “Sweater” when they chose my middle name
I decided to raise chickens for eggs and food because we already do partake in chicken meat and eggs but grocery chickens don’t live the best lives so why not raise them ourselves and give them good lives?
That being said, I hatched 18 chickens as soon as we bought our first house. (Me my son and daughter and their father my SO of 10+ years.)
Out of 18 eggs we got 15 cockerels and 3 hens
it’s been a challenge managing the boys and a lot more than I expected. We are currently working on processing them till we have a more appropriate ratio and have separated the poor hens to take over the garage till we reach that point.
I will never hatch that many eggs at once again...
On the bright side the girls are doing very well and the 2 older have started laying right on schedule. Per my hopes and dreams I got a pretty girl laying pretty green/blue eggs and the other lays brown. Both are doing really well and I’m very proud of them.
The boys are a huge challenge and between the hormones and upkeep I ended up joining this forum in need of help when one got sick.
I am so greatful for the invaluable advice and support I received to help me through my situation! You guys are the best! Thank you for your time and care in helping people be the best chicken keepers we can be!
