Hi everyone! So, after years of talking about getting chickens, we went to do some "research window shopping" at our local country store. We came home with chicks.

We have six chickens, the limit in our city. We have 2 golden sex links, 2 lavender orpingtons, and 2 black austrolorps. Now I wish we'd done a bit more research or grabbed one of those easter eggers or some of those that look unusual. But we got them for their disposition and egg laying, and they sure are fun so far. They jump on my hand if I hold out food, though less so now that they're bigger.

Here is the coop I'm building. It's on a slope, which is kind of unavoidable with the distance it needs to be from our neighbor's houses and where our trees and garden are. I learned about this plan, the Bella Plan, from here! I have questions but I'll address those in another post in the right place.

Oh yes, and we are getting our dogs used to the chickens gradually. Our German Shepherd laid on her side while one of them was on her and seems to be motherly towards them! Our born on a farm Border Collie 19 months old could care less, but we do want to train him to get the chickens into the run and coop. A puppy will be coming in a few weeks as a service dog and we'll have to get him/her used to them too. We have four kids; the youngest is 17.

I'm a writer and historian. I love to sew and garden as well as build.

Cheers!
