Hi everybody, I have been lurking for the better part of the last month and decided it was time to join in.
I'm have a dozen chicks showing up next week, 6 New Hampshires & 6 Buff Orpingtons for their dual purpose and brooding. I ordered all hens but from what I have heard chances are I should get a rooster or 2 which is what I'm hoping for to build a flock of my own over time. I have the majority of my coop completed ( 8 x 7 ) except for the main door and doors to access the laying boxes. I still have the run to build as well and am planning on making it 8 x 16 with roof heights of 6 to 8 feet.
I'm sure I will be seeking answers for some questions that I'm sure will arise.

Hello, and welcome! Good luck with finishing the coop and with your future flock! Do you have a brooder set up yet for those chick's when they arrive?
Sure do, I have a workshop that has heat & water. I keep it cool in there most of the time, just warm enough to keep my water pipes from freezing. I plan on turning the heat up to about 50-55 or so and a brooder plate to provide a warm spot. We made several DIY feeders and waterers to figure which we prefer & also have some marbles for the waterer to prevent accidental drownings, from what I have read anyway.
Thanks for the welcome.
I have done a lot of prep but am sure I will get tripped up at some point, it's the things you can't plan for that get ya & that's why I joined, lots of good info and resources.

You will learn more new thing's as you go that will make thing's easier on you to be able to do. I love my feed bucket out there, and I'm thinking of doing up another bucket with those cup's on it for the water.

Don't turn up the heat. Leave it where ever you normally keep it. They will do just fine with the brooder plate and will acclimate to their natural environment better if you keep them as close to ambient temperature as possible.
DIY feeders and waterers
Have you looked into making one of these? They work fantastic to keep the brooder dry and the water clean.
