Hi Everybody

:frow
Hi, I don't have chickens just yet, I plan to get some in the future! I'm very fascinated in chicken genetics and I want to breed chickens for a living!
My favorite breed of chicken is the Rhode Island Red! What is yours? I'd like to know! :D
welcome to BYC. This is a good place to make friends and is an never ending place to learn from others.

Glad to meet you. There are interesting things about chicken genetics, like how some breed crosses result in chicks where the females look different from males from the day they hatch. If you are interested in genetics, you might like to read about the auto sexing crosses. You can use google, or the SEARCH bar here.

As some folks have said, choosing a breed is complicated. Some breeds do better in hot climates, and some in cold climates, and some in both and middling climates. Some breeds do better in confinement, or at foraging and free ranging.

The breeds that tend to be safer when free ranging often are less friendly to people because they are a bit twitchier and wilder. But they are quicker to evade hawks than the calmer, friendlier breeds.

Breeds that are bred to be super high egg producers do often have reproductive tract issues. But you can get breeds that have very good egg production and live longer, healthier lives. You can choose breeds that are good for both meat and egg production. Or you can keep chickens just mostly for pets and fun. Or some combination of those interests.

You can read more about different breeds of chickens here on BYC, where nobody is trying to sell you anything (except persuade you that their favorite chicken is the best). Enjoy exploring! Learning and exploring ahead of chickening makes the chickening that much better! Best wishes!
