I've been around chickens and other farm animals all my life. I was born in Texas, moved to Louisiana when I was 16 and then Alaska when I was 45. I started with 15 each Buff Orpingtons and Black Austrolarp about 6 years ago. Now I have a mixed flock of about 20 hens, 2 roosters and 7 little peeps. We had about an inch of snow this morning but the girls didn't seem to notice. They have the run of 3 acres and a nice insulated chicken house. I have an 85 pound Newfie/Lab mix that protects them from the eagles and hawks. They sound the alarm and she goes running and doesn't leave them until the danger is passed. Our chickens are family. Even on snowy winter days my husband and I set in the chicken house and visit.
