Hi everybody. My wife and I have decided to add some chooks to our family. Currently it is us and two dogs. We have a spot in the corner of the backyard which I will fence off. Their yard will be about 200 square feet and the coop is 5' x 5' x 5'. We're hoping the dogs will get along with them, as we plan to let them explore the whole backyard eventually. I would like to hear how others have gone with their dogs. This will be our first time with chooks so I have a lot of reading to do.

I was considering growing a creeping plant of some kind up the back fence and a small tree or two in their yard. Can anyone suggest plants which would be good for chooks as far as providing food for them goes?

My son has five border collies who are around his free range (all over the barnyard) chickens all the time. You just need to train them to leave them alone. If a young dog gets fascinated by a chicken and starts to worry it, he just says "that'll do," and the dog stops. It's beautiful to watch.

Several years ago, we had a dog that killed 23 meat chicks - she couldn't stand the peeping, I think. Well, she got walloped, and she never went near them again.
