Joined your forum today and wanted to tell a little about myself. I'm 48 yrs. old and have lived all my life in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. My husband drives tractor/trailer and my son lives in Florida with his wife and my 2 adorable grandbabies, Karisma who is 5 and Tayden who is 2.
I live on a farm here in WV and we have lots of critters.
I love chickens!!! And all feathery children. My all time fav chicken from the breeds I have kept would have to be the buff orps. They make the sweetest gals. But as they are getting old now, I'm down to 1 golden girl. I also have what I think is a standard cochin hen and a standard brahma rooster. Not quite sure about these two. They were given to me as a cochin pair but I don't believe the rooster is. He has a pea or rose comb, not a single comb, which is what I think the cochins have. Mr. Weasley, the rooster is my avatar, so if you can tell from the small pic what he is , I would love to know. If I were to post a pic of Mr and Mrs Weasley could someone maybe tell me what breed they are?? I also have several different roosters. Seems like no one ever wants them and they always call me and ask if I will take them, which of course I do.
I have a dominique rooster,3 black and 1 white silkie roosters, and smaller game roosters that I have no idea their breed. I ordered 25 barred rock female chicks from an online hatchery and they are due to be here one day next week, so I have been getting ready for them. If you are looking for a deal, my pet chicken. com has an overrun of barred rocks and rhode island reds. You get 25 female chicks, shipping included for 41.50. So thats a great deal. I have never had the barred rocks before so thought I would give them a try. Please let me know of any likes/dislikes you have of this breed. I also have a herd of Katahdin sheep. They are hair sheep. They shed like a dog every spring, you do not have to sheer them. So thats good for me. This is the first year that one of the ewes has doubled up on lambs. She had a male lamb back in Feb. and just had a set of twins last week. This breed is supposed to be popular for that, so looks like it is working out. I also have ducks, geese, dogs, parrots, a chinchilla and two aquariums. A 55 gal with angelfish and a 40 gal. waiting for angelfish.
So that tells you that I live on Old Tammys Farm in the middle of West "BY God" Virginia.
And that I don't get much else done for taking care of critters, except for what knitting time I can get in.
Nice to meet everyone and hope to learn lots here,
Tammy
