Hi everyone! I am a newbie to the site with a question on chicken comb health.

We recently lost our best Roo and order another one offline to replace. He just arrived and looks healthy except for his Comb. I have him quarantined. He is from up north in colder state and we are in the south, so not sure if it looks like frostbite, fowl pox, or mold type problem, or just an old crusty comb?? The larger black area is actually a whole all the way through. The whole comb looks very white/pale.
Please give me your opinion on what it is and maybe a way to treat it. Thanks

Glad you joined us!

I would say it's just an old crusty comb, or he was injured in some way.

Great! Thank you. I was just concerned about the way it looks. Haven't seen one this bad before. Appreciate your quick response!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X2 That is a pecking injury. The comb looks dry too. If you are not sure he has been wormed recently, you might worm him too. Always good to do with new birds. Give him some extra lovin' and he should be good as new soon!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sorry to hear about your rooster. You might try rubbing some coconut oil on his comb. Coconut oil is very good for the skin and can help it heal faster.

Wishing you the best of luck!

He's a beautiful roo. I would ask the people what happened to his comb. Maybe they thought you wouldn't notice. Have you checked him for mites ?
