My husband and I are living in Southeast Wisconsin, a half mile as the crow flies from Lake Michigan. We've had chickens since June 22, 2022. We started with 10 chicks since that is the limit our town statute says we can have on 2 acres or less land. Well, we had 10 hens. We have Plymouth Barred Rocks, and I chose them because of temperament, being more of a heritage breed, being dual purpose chickens, and because of laying eggs during the winter. The more time I spent with the hens, the more I found I really enjoyed chickens, and truthfully, we all are smitten. I predominantly take care of our chickens.
I discovered BYC 3 years ago when I did a google search about taking car of chickens when we were deciding if we should have chickens. I've continued to go back and read, and google for information, and I keep coming back to BYC. I decided to join because now that my feet are wet, I have questions myself that I'd like to ask, and some situations where I may have answers once in a while. I like the respect and support that is offered here. The knowledge and experience is diverse and remarkable on this site! This site offers real information that I haven't read elsewhere! I thought about getting chickens when I started reading about food security, but sat on it to do research, and think about if chicken keeping would be a good fit. We also don't have a vet who takes backyard chickens in their practice closer than 2.5 hours away. It's an exotic bird practice. So, I really depend on this knowledge to learn what to do for our chickens.
We started homeschooling, and as part of the project, we designed, and built the chicken coop and run with our boys out of repurposed wood, and part of science was chickens and their care. We all learned a lot, it's one thing to read about and do research, it's another to design and build it, and have hands on experience in the chicken's care in the different seasons.
My husband and I have been married for almost 33 years, we have two round of family, 4 kids, 2 grown, and this round two we're still raising who are almost 14 and almost 13. My husband is still working a full time job, and hopes to retire in two years. I work very part time facilitating a class about trauma informed care and parenting geared toward parents and professionals. We all like the outdoors, gardening, walking/hiking, I enjoy cooking, baking, reading, watching wildlife, having a good coffee and conversation, and love our girls.
I'm so grateful to be here!
