Hi everyone I raise Butler Quail and have answers for anyone new to raising quail.

Oh my! Lol
They're not very smart... One of mine died of heatstroke on an 85* day. I think it stood in the one patch of sunlight I didn't block & managed to forget where the water was. The other one just vanished from the cage; I'm thinking it squeezed out thru a tiny gap I found later.

Define committed suicide for me.. Did they quit eating ? Declare war on each other ? Flush and killed themselves when they hit the cage wire ? Do you have an enclosure similar to mine ? I need more information to help. Few points up front I learned the hard way.. You raise 10 in one cage and ten in another DO NOT attempt to mix them together . They are the Junk Yard dogs of the bird world and very territorial and they do not like strangers in their midst . I make my cages and enclosures between 8 and 12 inches tall . Anything more and if they flush they can gain enough velocity to break their necks or wings impacting the wire. 1" chicken wire or cage wire . No bigger ! Use 1/2" wire mesh for the bottom. Best to have one big wire cage with dividers to separate it into at least three sections. Cull really aggressive birds.. They will never stop being aggressive. Before they become sexually mature at around 18 weeks old cull some of the males so you have around 4 males for every 10 females. This will reduce the amount of fighting in the flock.. Hens will fight too but are not nearly as violent as the guys. A red light in the brooder is a must. Bright light makes quail more aggressive so keep them under a red light for the first three weeks at least.. Hope some of this helps

Brooder. 36"x36" fully insulated and temperature controlled. I have raised biddies in December and it works great. I cover the bottom wire in the winter with plastic and pine shavings and two 125 watt heat lamps maintain temp. very well. I also enclose the aviary with plastic every Thanksgiving and remove it at Easter. During the summer the plastic and pine shavings aren't needed.. Red 15 watt LED bulb (LOWES) illuminates the brooder.
