In the Brooder
Have always loved chickens. My first pet was a yellow hen, I never new what breed she was and her name was Sandy. She met me every morning, walked me to the driveway and lay beside me as i waited for the bus. In the afternoon, she would come running when she heard the bus coming back from school and she would run to the drive to meet me. She lived a long life and was loved on every day. Lost contact with chicks after I moved away from home and was in nursing school, then starting a career and a family and living in suburbia. Now I am retired and am back to having chickens. Have RIR, OEG, Buff orpington, barred rocks, Americauna, Ayani, and a newer hen that is beautiful, but I am not sure who's the momma, though I know the daddy is my OEG Rooster. I currently have 16 chickens and 4 roos. The OEG is the dominant male right now and I have had to separate out the other roos. My OEG is a rescue from a cock fighting ring. He was very used to being handled by people, but not used to being in a flock. He now is happy and healthy and is more of a lover than a fighter! I love my chickens. We tried our hand with an incubator last year as my Americauna left a nest twice late in brooding. We were very successful and watching the embryos develop was wonderful for myself, my husband and grandchildren. They all get attention and loves daily and are very personable, love to be held and talked to you, and often respond verbally! They get very excited when they see us enter the pen. Often they will jump up in my lap or on a shoulder or outstretched arm.
This year my husband and I will start a spring garden. I am sure my chicks and roos will love the treats from that.
We also have 3 cats(Ezio, Boogety and Samantha) and 1 puppy, Halsey (a mini basset hound/chihuahua mix) named by my retired Navy husband after Admiral Halsey.
Had a friend who recommended the group and I love the info shared!
