Hello BYC members, Blu Chicken here!

First, I'd like to introduce myself with these questions I've copied and pasted from a 'New Members Intro Thread' :)

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?: Yes! I am completely new to chickens. For the longest time I have thought about having chickens! But up until today, a family member came back home with 2 chickens! :jumpy

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 2

(3) What breeds do you have? Not sure, but I hope to find out through the help of members on here :D

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Not sure... YET!

(5) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am a young adult living in CA. I currently go to college, and own 2 pet dogs name Honey and Bear! :highfive: I currently am a waiter and a co-business owner!

(6) How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I found BYC through Google. Hehe. :celebrate I've joined different forums for different hobbies so I thought there would have to be one for chickens!

In the end, I really do hope to educate myself about raising backyard chickens. I totally understand that the "impulse buy," by my family member was irresponsible (especially with no background research to support these chickens) but I'd still appreciate everyone's input!

Any tips for a new chicken owner to learn how to start raising chickens in the backyard?

Thank you everyone. I hope to learn, and get adjusted into this community! :ya

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Clearly the first order of business is appropriate food, fresh clean water and a safe place to roost at night. You need to get going on building a coop! You need to determine if you just want these 2 or if you plan to get more and build accordingly. I would strongly advise NOT to buy a prefabricated coop. They are never worth the money and are grossly undersized.
If you want to know what breed(s) chickens you have, post some pictures either here in your intro thread or start a new thread under Breed and Gender.
Do you have any idea how old these chickens are? Why were the previous owners getting rid of them? You mention you are in CA. Are you in the vND quarantine zone?
