I have loved the Backyard Chickens pages for a long time, just looking things up on the forum pages whenever I had a question - then I'd get stuck going down the "rabbit hole" looking at page after page and loads of pictures of (mostly) beautiful chickens!
I have quite a a few chickens; among them Australorps, Leghorns (brown, brown rose-comb, and Pearl White) Cinnamon Queens, Speckled Sussex, RIR, Buff Orpington, Easter Eggers, Welsummers (one pair), Cream Legbar, Assorted Red and gold crosses, New Hampshire (one), Dark Cornish, Mille Fleur D'uccles, Cochin Bantams, Partridge Rocks, one tiny Porcelain D'uccle and a few home-grown crosses - i.e. Gold Cochin Bantam (roo) x Mille Fleur D'uccle (hens) and Mille Fleur D'uccle (roo) x ass't Bantam Cochins. Also, a (LF) barnyard cross I was working on for a few years that I called "Harleys" that were beautiful, but I never could get more than a few, lost my last rooster and gave up. After all of that, I still have a wish list - I'd like to have a couple Mottled Javas and maybe an Iowa Blue. I think the Vorwerk from Europe is absolutely beautiful, but I don't know if there are any breeders in the U.S. My favorite is probably the Barnevelder, which I don't have at the moment, but always keep my eyes open. I had four at one time and they were so beautiful and sweet! My chickens are not as much 'pets' as I'd like sometimes, but I enjoy them a lot. I had some that were more like pets, but as time went on and my favorites were usually the victims of predator intrusions, I don't pet them as much. Still, when I go outside, it's not unusual to see about 40 or so chickens come running to see if I brought them a treat!
I first got chickens to help my health, to give me a reason to go outside and DO something! It has helped that, and periodically, when my health gets worse and I don't feel like it, it forces me to get out. When the Chicken Math began to take over, I began to sell eggs. When sales don't keep up with the eggs, I give extras to the mission where every fresh farm egg is appreciated - since it takes about 45 dozen to feed one breakfast there! Not bragging here, just making you aware that city missions can often take your extra eggs and will give you a donor receipt if you choose. Just make sure you are taking them fresh eggs - clean, refrigerated, and safe to eat.

:welcome Where do you live? Do you have any other pets or livestock? I am in Virginia, just got my 17 baby guineas and looking for some chicks. Enjoy those feathery critters and BYC! Welcome!
