Hi everyone!

I'm so excited to be here and to learn all about chickens! I honestly never in a million years thought those words would leave my mouth, yet here I am. I am TERRIFIED of birds so when my husband decided to buy 12 meat chickens, I was ready to ask Google, Alexa, Siri and anyone who would listen to recommend a good divorce lawyer in the area. I made up my mind right then and there I wasn't going to have anything to do with those winged demons, Satan's pets, as I call them.

Fast forward a few weeks, and one anxiety attack later, and I now love the little stinkers! Looking back, I have way too many chicken photos on my phone and meat chickens were NOT a good idea because I treat them like pets (haha - the one posted follows me around the yard like a puppy). We currently have 12, 4 week old White Rock X pullets. I'm actually devastated that we have to "dispatch" them in a few short weeks... So much so that I asked my husband to buy some laying hens for my birthday this spring! I never thought I'd see the day!

Looking to soak up any and all knowledge that I can so I'm able to make sure they're healthy and happy!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Love your introduction! Lots of people start out terrified of birds but chickens have a way of weaseling into your heart! Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!

Welcome to BYC! White rocks are actually dual purpose and you don't have to butcher them
Oh, you made my day! :)

When we picked them up from the hatchery we were told they were "Fast Growth" and if we waited longer than 8 weeks or so they would run the risk of developing fluid accumulation because their organs aren't developed to handle how fast they grow :(

Thank you so much! I've been lurking around for a while, but decided it was time to join! I'm so glad I did! I'm looking forward to learning :)

Generally meat birds kept as pets should be fed a VERY light diet or fed every other day. They gain weight just looking at food. I certainly know what that is like. :p Just keep them thin as possible.
