Hi Everyone!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I got my first chicks in March of 2020, alongside the stay-at-home order - seemed like good timing to finally establish my flock
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I have 17 adults and chicks in the incubator (but not counting them yet ;-) )
(3) What breeds do you have? Hens: 1 Buckeye, 3 Barred Rock, 4 Buff Orpington, 3 Lavender Orpington, 4 Australorps; Roos: 1 Buff (General Tso, dominant), 1 Lavender (Colonel Sanders, submissive) - I had two more Lav roos that I gave to a neighbor to guard their flock
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They are SOOO entertaining - the eggs are great, but I love their antics and they seem to keep my horse and donkey entertained. They also really help with the black flies in the summer as well as other pests.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We have a horse (pleasure riding) and a mini donkey; we do a lot around our small farm, forest upkeep and gardening, outdoor pursuits such as kayaking and hiking, and I'm working on a travel/outdoors podcast.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My background is in animal agriculture and wildlife, though I currently do system work for a large retailer (financing the farm); my husband is a computer engineer and outdoors expert, his favorite chicken is Colonel Sanders. We have two rescued Shiloh Shepherds in addition to our barn crew!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've been surfing posts for awhile, and just recently started my hatching process (I found a rogue nest set up by one of my Lavs); I had hatch-anxiety with a slow hatching chick malpositioned, and found the assisted hatching post SUPER helpful. Figured I should join and support!
