Hi all!
First I want to say-I LOVE seeing anything Backyard Chickens arrive in my inbox! I’m so grateful to all of you for chatting and sharing!
We are new to chickens,,, we have 34 acres and have had our own horses, so have run a small boarding business. However, ecided to bring that season to an end and enjoy it as a family, treasuring it as our own backyard.
So the first thing this mama of nine did was build a coop and hatch some chicks along with her kiddos-and we have fallen in love.
We have a beautiful flock of 14 girls and two roosters, and a handful of adorable dairy goat babies; and we are loving every minute of our little farm. Well, almost every minute... despite our property being completely fenced (even areas consisting of wood and wetlands), we have recently had a neighboring dog find his way in. And he’s fast. Sadly, we are now three girls down in just a matter of weeks and are battling the tears (two being our very best girls, and one teeny bopper... (our three year old is in denial and insists that her ‘Bock-Bock’ is just lost and living at a neighbors house. Not sure what to do there.)
All that to say our chickens free range-as it’s grazing heaven all year round (we’re in subtropical SW Florida), but it’s been the random moments they have fallen victim that have disrupted our little haven. I’ve gone from keeping them in their coop alll day for days at a time, to FINALLY letting them out to enjoy their world of horse pasture once again, only to have *him return.
[We’ve warned his owners and are hoping they will oversee him properly now. But I still don’t have much faith and don’t want to risk our sweet girls]. So we are now looking into a livestock guardian dog... I’ve heard there are certain breeds that go well with poultry. Hoping and praying for no more tears here.
Any words of wisdom or advice would be greatly welcomed!
Thank you for reading and allowing us a place to learn and grow and belong-while striving to give our chickens the best lives ever!
PS-our ‘handsome guy’ (pictured here)... is great with me ans the kids, but has recently challenged my husband and our oldest (son, husband’s same height)... not sure if there’s such a thing as a guy thing!?!
