Hi, I'm Adrianne! I live on a ranch in Colorado with my husband & 5 kids. We adopted a mixed breed rescue flock last September, and they were in terrible health after being neglected their whole lives. The Brahmas and Salmon Faverolle had lost all their leg feathers and parts of toes to scaly leg mites, two of the Rhode Island Reds and one White Leghorn had egg yolk peritonitis, one of the Plymouth Barred Rocks had "stones" of crud lodged in her foot webbing, they were all malnourished... you name it, they had it!
I found so much helpful info here on BYC that helped us get them healthy for the first time! In spite of our best efforts, we lost 3 to illness, 3 to wiley coyotes, and were down to just 6 girls. But the ladies we have left are living out their golden years in chicken paradise now! So much so, that my 13yo son just won Grand Champion in Egg Production at our county 4-H fair... probably because he had to work so much harder than any other kids to get his hens laying right.
Last month, I obtained a Silkie rooster named Dr Pecker, and 12 chicks (now 6 weeks old): Brahmas, Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers and Silkies. I also got 18 hatching eggs of assorted breeds, only 8 of which have hatched so far, but we've got more Brahmas, an Amerucana, Copper Maran, Silkies, and I'm pretty sure one Ayam Cemani!! So our flock is expanding, and as I love coming to this forum for answers, I figured I'd join!
Thanks for reading - looking forward to chatting with you!
