Hi! Its nice to meet you all! I am from Kansas City, Missouri and recently moved to the country for more peace and quiet. I live on a small plot of 2 acres surrounded by forest, with a few lakes nearby. Have been here for almost a year now and I think I’m getting a little spoiled! For instance, when anyone other than the mailman drives by, my first thought is wtf! and second, why are you on my road?:p Well its not really my road but my chickens are always in the middle of it. Thankfully I live on top of a hill and the terrain will not accommodate those with lead feet.:D

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I’m semi-new to free range chickens (around 8 months) but have had experience raising backyard chickens for the last 3 years.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently I have 11 hens and 2 roosters. Unfortunately I’ve been dealing with losses over the last couple of months due to unknown illnesses and this has led me here.

(3) What breeds do you have?

2 Easter Eggers (Earl & Blonde), 2 Speckled Sussex (Laverne & Shirley), 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes (Cagney & Lacey) 1 Barred Rock (Thelma) 2 unknown breeds, possibly a RIR (Mrs. Red), a Black Australorp (TT), and 4 silkies (Bonnie, Clyde, Nell and Marsha Mallow).

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Ohhhhh the drama! I find them so interesting and comical to watch!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Crocheting, crafting, reading everything here on BYC.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My husband and I have two bird dog vizslas, two indoor kitties and 1 outdoor stray kitty we’ve been looking out for. We have 3 adult kids, are newish empty nesters, and enjoy filling our extra time caring for animals, especially those in need.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I’ve known of BYC since getting chicks 3 years ago but did not realize the amount of info available here until recently! When our first illness occurred, I began googling and it led me here every time. Figured I might as well join and learn all I can to help my flock healthy and I’m extremely grateful for all of the information here.:wee

Welcome to BYC!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Any insight as to what illness may be taking your birds?
Thank you for the warm welcome!:) We do not have a definitive diagnosis yet, despite a vet visit and positive fecal test for girardia. We treated the flock for coccidiosis, wormed with safeguard, and gave the prescribed Flagyl from the vet. The illness seems to be only affecting the silkies however a speckled sussex came down with a respiratory virus which I caught early and Tylan 50 helped her through that. We’ve lost our silkies approx. 6 weeks apart from each other. Really hoping we’re over this now.:fl A necropsy would have helped however we couldn't afford that, so we’re boosting the others immune systems with greens, garlic, oregano, and when needed b-complex and vitamin e. Had one doing summersaults which was a sight to see but the vitamins worked for her. If it weren't for BYC, I probably would've lost 2 more.:thumbsup
