Hi Everyone!!
I am a married, mother of one little boy thinking about raising chickens in the somewhat near future (maybe in a year or so). We live on almost 15 acres with 2 ponds in northeast Ohio. Ive done a lot of reading on here and will do a lot more. This site has tons of great information and I enjoy it even though I don't own any yet. I guess my question would be, what is the worst part of owning chickens? I am looking to only have about 4. I've thought of some downfalls of owning some but I am sure there are things I havent thought of. Any info would be appreciated. Things I am worried about are them getting really sick or infested with lice. And of corse predators.

THANKS!!

Glad you joined us.

Off course there is always the possibility of diseases, infestations and predators, but there are ways to prevent and/or manage those things. I have just four as well. They are a little over two years old and laying wonderfully. I think the benefits far outweigh any possible problems.

Hello and welcome from Southwest Ohio...so glad you joined us. You will enjoy chickens so much. The worst part for me is not having the time and money to build more coops so I can have more chickens. I love them. There is such fantastic info on BYC to help you keep your chickens healthy. And so many knowledgeable people on here to help in a flash if something isnt right. The most important thing is to keep a close eye on your chickens daily so that anything not quite right can be taken care of quickly. They are pretty easy if you have proper housing and supervision. Good luck getting your chickens. Can't wait to see pics

from New Mexico!

Chickens are fun birds to keep. But with all livestock, they can get sick. Keep your facilities as clean as possible, feed them a good feed. Keep them wormed and be aware of their healthy state so you can jump on any illness that makes them look "off" for a short spell.

But don't worry too much. They are wonderful birds to keep! They can bring you so much joy and entertainment.
