I started out knowing nothing about hens, but have had a flock since April in Western NC - started with 20 - 10 Comets, 2 Buff Oringtons, 3 Americauanas, 1 Leghorn, 3 Welsummers and a Barred Rock. Lost one to a hawk, lost one to a parasite, down to 18 hens. Treated everyone, added 6 more - 1 Lacy Wyandotte, 1 Rhode Island Red, 3 more Comets and 1 Bantam Leghorn. Been following this blog, newsletter, thread, everything I can get my hands on. Did an online course from Univ of Arkansas on Back Yard Poultry, but have mostly learned on the fly being their only caretaker. Finally decided to say hi!

Hi Karin and welcome to BYC. Experience is indeed a good teacher and whatever we see posted here on BYC carries a considerable caveat in that only we know our own situation / environment. A good dose of common sense, combined with knowledge is a good combo, in my opinion.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/website-announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3/?prefix_id=3

You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
