Hi everyone, I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up on a farm where we free ranged a variety of chicken breeds. We hatched most of them out of an incubator and some hatched their own eggs after the first year. Some were meat birds, some were egg layers, and others were just pets. My favorite pets were a RIR rooster and a Red Star hen who would sit on my shoulders as I rode my bike. I had a long break from chicken-keeping while I was in college and for several years after, and am just now returning to chicken-keeping for the first time as an adult and for the first time ever in a suburban backyard.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I started with three but am currently down to one due to some really novice mistakes with dogs. The chickens and chicks I had growing up always lived with our sheepdogs and we never had problems and my own dog was very gentle with them, but then a dog that belonged to my friend and my husband's dog took out two. My remaining one is being housed much more carefully.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I lost a Jersey Giant and a RIR and have a White Rock left.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Through a Google search.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm interested in the environment and conservation and enjoy most outdoor activities, particularly kayaking, backpacking, and gardening. I also enjoy art and photography.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm married with no kids but a number of pets. In addition to my chicken, I have a wonderful basset/cocker mix, a loyal lab/dane mix, and a really nutty Great Dane mix who has proven herself untrustworthy around chickens as well as three cats, an eleven year old turtle, and some assorted fish.
