I'm new to this. We are planning on getting a few chicks in the next few weeks. I'm a planner so I want to have everything ready before we bring them home. Our friend gave us a coop and a run that they had built. We are going to fix it up and add some personal touches to it. I just thought I would say hi!!

What breeds do you plan on getting? I see you live in Walmart's hometown. Maybe you could name a girl chick "Walmartha?" She could be a model in their ads. Nevermind, forget it. I think I need a nap or something.

Lol!! I'm still looking at different breeds. I want ones that are super friendly, since I have kids, and that are great egg layers!

You might want to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry....

As for breeds, lots of friendly breeds that are also great layers. I am a huge fan of the Orpington breeds....Buff Orpingtons and the Black Australorps. My girls follow me around all day looking for goodies or a nice soft lap to sit on. Can't sit anywhere without a chicken on my lap! They are docile, affectionate, great layers and are hardy over all. Here is a link to our breeds page so you can see what others are saying about the different breeds...

Also, here is a nice breeds page that I used while picking my breeds. Has nice quick fun info...

Good luck with your new adventure and welcome to BYC!
