We are starting our first flock and it has been very rewarding. All six of our chicks have made it almost to laying age. We have three Rhode Island Reds and three barred rocks. Still no eggs!

If they aren't roosters, you'll be getting eggs soon

We have three with bright red waddles and combs, not sure about the squatting though! They are a real hoot to watch. I have really enjoyed the chicken experience. We got our chickens from tractor supply, all pullets, so if their is a rooster in the bunch they will have some explaining to do! We have been having an issue with two of our girls waking up between 5 and 6 am crowing. We cannot figure that one out, but hope after they start laying they will quiet down. There is an ordinance against roosters so we don't want neighbors complaining thinking we have one.

Hens don't crow. If they are doing a cock-a-doodle-doo sort of noise then I am guessing you are not getting any eggs out of those birds. Girls do make noise though and squawk and chatter. You can always post some pics in the "What breed of gender if this?" section of the site. There are some very experienced people who are good at sexing if you are concerned. Most sexed chicks only come with a 90% accuracy rate if I am remembering correctly.
