Welcome, it's so nice to meet you! I'm from NC myself and this year started raising chickens and well... chicken math took over and the addiction began! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do here...I have met many wonderful friends and learned SOOOO much from many of the pros. Jump right on in, you will feel right at home in no time!
Hi there guys, thanks for the warm welcome.
I have a Nera, an amber and a belleblue but it's a local hybrid so it's called a Cambridge blue. They seem To be getting on fine so far. Had so many pointless worries about them not leaving the coop but they've found their way out now and they seem fine.
My only worry is they aren't very friendly with me yet.. I know it will take time but my mum had said today she went to visit them and as she said hello to one they all came out the coop to see her. When I visit they just look at me and keep their distance.
I'm thinking it's just because I'm the big bad man that took them from
Their home and make all the noise when I clean out the coop. Haha.
They'll most likely be friendlier once they get used to their new surroundings. And if they don't, try bribing them with treats. I know our birds would do almost anything for their favorite treats
Yeah think they're still just a bit nervous. They seem to be getting the hang of things, although the biggest one hasn't quite worked out the ramp to the coop and always seems to just jump straight up lol. Its very amusing to watch.
They even seem to be sorting out a pecking order, nothing too serious so far thankfully, but there's been a few pecks and raised feet! I think it's all a good sign
Any good tips on treats? I've tried bread and lettuce so far they didn't seem overly bothered by either. But It was in the evening and they had been in the run scratching most the day. Theyre very reluctant to take anything from my hand yet.
Cabbage, mine love it, especially if I hang it up using string so they can play tether cabbage. And when it's hot outside, they really go crazy for chilled watermelon or cantaloupe. But try checking out the Treats chart for a list of all sorts of different treats for chickens: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens
Ah thanks, that chart will come in really handy. tonight I sat with them for about an hour, just chilling with my girls. Got two of them eating out of my hand! Such a small thing but I'm so happy! I just picked a bit of fresh grass and held it out for them. Again thanks for the help.
