We are new to chickens but have jumped in with both feet. We have 5 chicks now, 3 leghorns and 2 pullets. Working on the new coop which I will post here when complete. We are looking to get 7 more chicks but haven't decided on a breed yet.

! Great to have you aboard! You have building skills I envy! Unsure of the size of the coop itself vs. the run but it is recommended that you allow 4 sq. ft. per bird in the coop and 10 sq. ft. in the run. That being said - my coop is far smaller than that - but I get away with it because they have a large run and often free range. So, if your coop is smaller than the recommended size but they have a good run and/or range you will be fine. If not and they are always confined they may become stressed and start pecking and picking one another. Good luck to you and best wishes!

The coop itself is 6x6 and the run is 6x12...I had planned on 3 square feet per girl. They all free range 4 or 5 times a week. I want to get 7 more for a total of 12. I've read here that happy chickens lay the best eggs. So I play with them daily and hope the new coop will give them the adequate room requirements. If not I'm up for building a larger one...lol.

Then I believe you are good to go since they will have ample opportunity to get out and about!! I think you are right about happy chickens - they lay more eggs! Good luck to you!
