Delawares! They're the best, IMO.
ETA: If you look up Jesse McDaniel, he's a reputable Delaware breeder that I believe lives in TX. He should have good stock.
I've seen him run auctions on ebay before...

Greetings..I have 6 hens and I don't have to deal with poo daily at all except to watch where I walk when they free range, but I don't really notice that in the grass. I use deep litter method and I don't have to add litter that often (weekly?) and the run has sand and dirt but doesn't get too bad in a week. My hens are out of the coop atleast 3-4 hours daily which cuts down on the coop poop. Good luck.

 

[Myrtle's Babies]

Newbie to raising chickens. My grandparents raised chickens on their farm in Missouri.
They sold the eggs in town once a week. Liked gathering the eggs when there wasn't
a chicken sitting on the nest. Did not like to get pecked. I live in rural Central Texas where,
we converted a fenced area that was a dog run and built a goat barn. Goat are not gone
and have converted it to a chicken coop for Myrtle and her seven babies that were born May 2, 2010.

Will upload pictures of the three red/brown birds. I know that the red/brown with silver/gray
legs is rooster. I have watched him crow. Will post pictures as I don't know the breed. Myrtle lays
light green/blue eggs

No, you can free range before they start laying. They won't lay till their around 6months old .Put some fake eggs & hay in their nesting boxs .They will figure out thats where to lay.
