My name is Craig larson I'm new to the chickens , I wanted some for the eggs and my boys wanted some cool looking ones they could put in the fair when they get older( the chicks). One has a polish and the other got a black silkie bantam. I got thoes two about 3 weeks ago the polish acts like a mother to the silkie. She let's it sleep under her and all. A young mail roo polish wouldn't do that would he ?? Something keeps telling me he is a rooster but I don't know how to tell with the head feathers. Then this past thur. I got my 5 blacks 5 reds and 2 white leghorns for the eggs. How long should I wait to let them free range they have and indoor outdoor coop for when they get a lil bigger.having a blast with them so far can sit and watch them for hrs at a time!!

Welcome to BYC, Craig! Congratulations on your new chickens. Which variety of Polish do you have? I used to have some Golden Polish and Black Silkies. My Polish rooster bred with my Black Silkie hens and produced some of the prettiest chickens that I've ever had. Do you know what breeds your blacks and reds are? If not, maybe you can post some pictures on line and we can help with that. Also, we could help determine the sex of your Polish. Good luck with your flock.

The polish I'm not sure of it has a solid black body and a white head. The reds and blacks I got from a feed store and they came from sunny side hatchery in bever dam wi.

this is the best one I got for now I'll take another one tomorrow. I was supposed to s/he as a chick new hatching and suppose to be sexed. But by the time the person I got it from called for to pick up the silkie and polish it looked IMO 3 to 4 weeks older then my silkie and got a bs sounding story about why the size and age difference. Then as I'm there talking the lady did a swap with the other polish she had gotten at same time. I didn't think much of it at the time but now I'm starting to wonder? The lady was 4 sheets to the wind so I wasn't going to Sit and question it

this is the best one of the chicks I got I ordered 5 reds 5 blacks and 2 whites and they gave me two eggxtra ( lol) which I don't know what they gave extra of. The receipt just says what I ordered and the feed store don't know either cause there really just a delevery. Spot for the hatchery.

I used to hang out at the polish threads and read that the males have wild, rock star crests and the females have a rounded bouffant style. I don't know how reliable that is.

Here are more pics I took this am hope they help a lil more. I was wondering about the yellow ones cause you can kinda see the red thing on there heads like a rooster lol. Some of the black ones have white spots on breast or on wing but not on the head.
