Hi Everyone! I am JoAnn and I live in NE South Dakota. I began keeping chickens back in 1999 when we bought our farmstead. We started out with just a couple layers the first year. Then each year we added a few more, each year a different breed. That way we could figure out how old they were! We also used to raise about 150 meat birds but do not do that anymore.

After 6 years we ended up moving off our farm for 8 years and did not have chickens! I missed that. My inlaws rented our farm from us and kept the chickens we had. When we moved back there were 3 chickens left of the 12 we had when we left. We purchased some more and were up to 20 chickens. I sold the eggs at work.

We replenished a few every other year and then lost a few to disease and predators. Currently we have 16 chickens, black australops, a barred rock implant from a friend, leghorns, buff orpington, red and black wyandotte, and rhode island red.

I quit selling eggs at work because everyone wanted me to deliver (work has three separate buildings) and that got to be a hassle. At the time they were in molt (the chickens - haha) and I just decided to keep them for our family and give to my adult children.

I have a lot of eggs right now and was looking for recipes that used a bunch of eggs. I Googled and found the recipe forum on BackYardChickens. I am so glad I did!

I commute to work 25 miles and really don't have a lot of time for hobbies. I work in the student loan servicing industry but don't worry - I give refunds on overpayments.

We have sheep, goats, llamas, chickens (of course), a heifer blank angus calf this year, and tons of barn cats along with the 3 dogs (one inside and two out). I do spin wool when I have time, crochet and knit (it's been awhile), and have started prepping for emergency situations. I also have sold Avon products for 12 years.

I am a married grandma and we raise one of our grandchildren (7 yrs old) due to my daughter's medical reasons. I am pretty busy. My husband is retired law enforcement (32 years) but decided he still needs to work a full time job anyway.

I am looking forward to being a part of this community and learning and sharing about chickens and life on the farm!

JoAnn

I like your story!
It takes a lot of effort to sell eggs and work full time. I stopped that and went down in chickens. It is amazing how much more time I have now!
