Hello, all! I live in North Carolina and have a small backyard farm consisting of 2 horses, 4 chickens, and 4 guineas (of course, we also have 5 cats inside, 4 dogs outside in a fence, a conure, and 2 indoor rabbits!). I am new to the horses and chickens, and this seems to be a great learning tool for my birds. I bought my birds from a lady on June 3, and she said the chickens were 5 months old then. I'm not so sure, because one of the roosters just started crowing last week! He is definitely a Jersey Giant, but the other rooster I'm not sure about. The 2 hens don't lay yet, either, and I'm not sure about their breed, either. The guinea keets were 2-3 weeks old when we bought them, and they are just about big enough to turn out now, I think.

We bought the guineas for insect control, and the chickens for scratching through the horse manure in the pasture. Trouble is, they won't go in the pasture! They stay in the yard around the house- under bushes to stay cool. I'm hoping that will change when the temperature comes down some.

They seem pretty happy! When I first got them, one of the hens was making a weird congested, snorting sound (I didn't catch it until I got them home, of course). That continued for a few weeks, but now has stopped and everyone is healthy! They run around the yard like they own the place- even beat up on the outside cats!

Hello and welcome to BYC

If you post pics of your chickens in the Breed/Gender section some of the more experienced members may be able to tell you what they are and how old they are.

I've had experience with that round here. it's rather amusing to watch a cat run off yowling after being chased by a chicken half its size :lau

Hi and :welcome

Sometimes when it gets cold the chickens don't want to go anywhere either, they just stand around huddled up  You'll probably get them into the pasture while the weather's nice though.

You have very nice birds in your avatar!

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D
