You've come to the right place to learn every thing you need to know, enjoy!

Thank you so much! I'm very excited. Do you know if the small coops that can be purchased from farm stores like Buchheits and Orscheln are ok to start with?

Most of those pre-fab coops are, tiny, not very good quality, and do not hold up long at all. There are some better ones, but they tend to be really pricy. Cost wise you are usually better off building one yourself, finding someone to build one for you, or re-purposing/modifying something like a shed. Check out the Coops section of BYC for some ideas.

Hi. I'm new from northern mn. We got our first chicks this past spring. We had a really devastating thing happen few nights ago someone came in and took the hinge off of our coop and stole five of our chickens we are just devastated and wanted to know if this seemed common to anybody else? We live in a small safe time I am just shocked and they can take all of them they just chose certain ones. So sad they are our buddies:(

Thanks for the info on prefabs. I think I'll take the money I would have spent on it and buy the materials to build my own. I have until Spring.
