Hi there!

I came across BYC by Googling the many questions I had about chickens, chicken breeds and sexing chicks. Since BYC appeared in all my searches I decided to join this community so I could ask more specific questions, and perhaps share some of what I've learned since I restarted raising chickens in April 2021.

I'm not entirely new to chickens as I got my first chicks at the age of nine, and was very successful in raising them. When I got busy with school work my mother took over. Now in my late 50s, encouraged by COVID-19 lockdowns, I decided to start again. I realise now there is so much to learn about chicken breeds and behaviours! My passion for chickens continue unabated, perhaps even more so now, as I learn about and observe them more.

I live in Brisbane, Australia (are there any Australian members?), where summer is very hot and humid (December to February) and winter tends to be mild and dry (June to August). I don't know how people manage to keep Brahma chickens here, with all those feathers, without getting them killed from heat stroke!

At the moment I've got six laying hens ranging from nine to 18 months of age. Four 9-month old hens were bought as day-old chicks, and two 18-month old Araucanas were acquired as year old, blue-egg laying hens. I've also got nine 11-week old chicks (three hatched at home + six bought as day olds) that I'm trying to ascertain the gender. The hens' breeds are: Araucana (2), Rhode Island Red (1), Barred Plymouth Rock (1), Silkie x Araucana (1), Gold Lace Wyandotte (GLW) x Welsummer? (1). The chicks are: 3 male Cream Legbar, 1 (male?) GLW, 1 (male?) SLW, 2 (female?) Speckled Sussex, 2 male Barnevelder. I need to rehome all the males as we are not allowed to keep roosters in urban areas. I managed to find new homes for the Barnevelders, but need to find homes for the Cream Legbars and Wyandottes, if they turn out to be boys (I think they are...).

Even though school restart has been delayed by two weeks due to Omicron fast spread, it will eventually start and I will get busy again. I am a Chemistry/Biology/Maths/ICT high school teacher and tend to get very busy during school term. But I hope I'll be able to find home for all my rosters by then and also have the time to check this community and continue to care for my darling hens.

Hi, welcome to BYC. I hope you are able to find homes for all your males.
BTW, I have brahmas, and have found that they do fine in hot weather. I'm in Texas and our summers are generally in the mid to high 90s, occasionally hotter. Our humidity is very high too.
Thank you Janie! Wow, I don't know why all my hens, even the young chicks suffer with the heat! Every night I go to the coop to give them water as they are breathing fast with open beaks and droopy wings. Here it's only 25oC (77oF) but with 80% humidity it's hard to bear. I thought Brahma would suffer even more. Thought of installing a fan in the coop for them! Hahaha!
Hi, Welcome to BYC! thanks for joining.
Thank you!
