Hello all, from Dublin, Ireland.
Super excited about the prospect of setting up a coup & run and getting some chickens...

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
New to chickens, but have been considering getting them for some time

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None just yet. Still at the researching stage!

(3) What breeds do you have?
Am considering getting 2x RIRs and 2x Australorps. Would this be a good combination for eggs, child-friendly, not too noisy, small backyard, confined to small coup & run except a couple of hours at weekends.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
General googling of chicken-related queries

(5) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Family - myself, wife, and 3yr old son.
Occupation - I am an engineer, wife is a school teacher.

Hi, it's nice to have you here!

Regarding breeds...everyone has their favorites. The two you're asking about are very good egg layers. Some will say the RIR's are aggressive but I've never had a problem with them. Some will tell you Australorps are wonderful but I had a very persistent broody which didn't work for me as I wasn't planning to hatch chicks. Each bird has it's own personality and quirks. No matter what you get, I hope you enjoy them!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

As Pork Pie mentioned, BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. This one in particular may be of interest to you at this stage:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
