Hi everyone!
I'm a newb! (Obvs!) We don't have chickens yet, but we are raising mealworms in preparation for the chickies that we'll get when we buy a house next year. We started with a thousand, but hopefully our numbers will be much, much higher by next year! We are also going to raise red wrigglers and roaches. I already found THE mealworm thread, but if you know of any other cool threads on mealies, wrigglers, or roachies let me know!
We like animals (Parrots and lizards!) and have 2 young kids (age 9 and 6.)
That's about it, I think!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community!

Love your avatar! I used to keep Cockatiels and Lovebirds. They have all since passed on from old age. Just loved having them here in the house around me for decades.

Here is a thread on raising feeder insects. I have never read through it, but it may get you started on other insects...https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/412070/raising-feeder-insects

Not sure if it covers Black Soldier Flies, but there are some threads in our archives about this insect too.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join us. Raising chickens is a great experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. When it comes to getting chickens, do you have a breed preference?

No breed preference yet. We have been hearing about a Cornish Cross, for meat. And we love how cute the silkies are. (They look like they are straight out of a Dr. Suess novel!) Other than that, probably a mild mannered breed that is reputed to be a good layer. I'm sure in the next 6-8 months we'll learn quite a lot, and solidify our preferences more.
