Hi. We live in West Cork, Ireland and have a nice big garden for our 6 new hens about five months old. We have kept chickens on and off for the past 9 years. Hopefully these new girls will provide lots of eggs over the next few years.
The main problem in the west of Ireland is the rain!! We provide a covered area for the girls, but it's important to find hardy hens to cope with the wet. Another problem can be the general quality of birds. There are plenty of unscrupulous characters around and we need to assess new additions carefully.
We look forward to chatting with our worldwide feathered community and would like to offer advice if we can.

welcome!! hope to get to your end of the world someday? Tell me do you butter your chickens eggs after they are layed? and is it still a practice among the people and why? I have heard about it, but no one knows why?

Hi, and welcome to the BYC gang. If you like chickens, you're gonna LOVE it here!

My niece, Kerry, works for a company "Kerry" that is headquartered in Ireland. She is flying back and forth between the US and Ireland for a day or two every other week it seems. I sure wish she'd take me along for a visit sometime.

Hi Micheller1210. The tradition of smearing butter on eggs was used to preserve them. I haven't heard of anyone doing this in modern times. Ireland is a wonderful place, the people are welcoming, the scenery is stunning, the food is good!! Hope you make it here someday xx
