Hi, I'm Katie and I just moved to lexington, nc from Florida. We've got four acres of property and plan on getting a few chickens so we can have eggs and also for my daughters to have as pets. I'm new to chickens since I used to live in the city by the beach. Anyone have any good tips on a coop? I've seen lots of them that are elevated and lots that are on the ground is one better than the other?

I suggest taking a look at the Coops page for some good coop designs:Chicken Coop Designs

It is usually good if coops are elevated at least a little off the ground, as that makes it less susceptible to predators and to getting damp.

I have had both elevated and ground coops. I much prefer the ground coops for a few reasons. I can walk into a ground coop. Ground coops are warmer than elevated coops. My chickens hated their elevated coop and love being able to hang out in a large ground coop. My birds had all kinds of issues with frost bite in the elevated smaller coop. Hey neighbor!! I'm in Lexington as well.

As for the coops, chickens prefer to be higher up when they are sleeping. How many chickens will you have? If you plan to have breeds that like to brood their own chicks, having a coop on the ground as your brooder can be convenient. Otherwise, just get what will best suit your needs and budget. I've had multiple kinds and they all have their pros and cons.
