Hello everyone!!! I've decided to get back into the chicken addiction again. First attempt was free ranging and fend for yourself, that was dumb. Second attempt was very disappointing. we had 5 hens that where laying great. Then the owls and racoons declared war on us! Lost the hens and a very large Road Island Red rooster in two nights. The racoons hung on the side of the pen 4 feet in the air and ate through the chicken wire, and you know what happen then. I've been reading for two months all the great information on this website. I've got a 100 thoughts and questions, so thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and knowledge. VERY BIG THANKS!!!!!

! Happy to have you with us! Sounds like you are having some tough lessons. Hopefully BYC can help you with your next birds. If you haven't read about hardware cloth yet, do so - it will save your birds where chicken wire won't. Good luck to you!

Welcome to BYC. Fortify your pens and control the predators when legally possible. Good luck in reestablishing your flock.
