(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Relatively new to chickens. The first flock arrived in the mail in 2016, still learning something every day!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 8 chickens we bought at Tractor Supply on April 4th of this year but are considering a Fall hatch since we have very mild winters.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 1 Lavender Orpington Cockerel, 1 Lavender Orpington Pullet, and 6 ISA Brown (Red Sex Link?) Pullets. 2 of the ISA Browns have already begun laying!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love watching them and seeing their different little personalities, teaching my children about where our food comes from, going on an Easter egg hunt every day, and hatching chicks!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I run a web design company from home and homeschool our 2 older children and hang out with my 1 and 2 years old as well. That's about all the time I have. Oh and sleep, I like doing that when I get a chance
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have four children, we also have two indoor/outdoor cats that kind of chose us. Oh, and my middle son is dying to get bunny rabbits in the spring, so we'll see how that goes. We have a policy of "pets with a purpose" at our house So, cats catch the mice, chickens lay eggs, and give meat sometimes.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Been a lurker on BYC since before we got our first flock. lol. Finally decided to join because I'm dying to know what our fall hatch might come out looking like if we cross the ISA Browns with the Lav. Orpington rooster. The Lav. hen isn't laying yet, so no chance of pure LO babies. I couldn't find a thread that exactly matched that particular cross, so I finally had to join the group to find out! Lol. So excited to be here and be a real part of the BYC community!
