I am so excited to join the BYC community! I have wanted chickens my whole life but, being a city dweller, thought it was impossible. I learned that if you have the space you can have chickens in LA and I do, so I got 'em! They are so fun! I have a batch that are 6 mos that I raised as tiny chicks. I have a second batch that I've started that are about 2 mos. Unfortunately, I have 3 cockrels and only 2 pullets. I am the worst chicken sexer ever! My 6mos cockrel just started crowing. It's really funny to watch and hear but I am so worried that my neighbors will hate me. He is my favorite chicken! I have been woken many a night by barking dogs, I don't get why having a rooster crow a few times is considered such a nuisance. Anyhow, he has started pecking me as I let him out to free range so I guess I have to get rid of him. I love having a rooster to protect my girls and for entertainment. Are there any successful city flocks with a rooster out there? Any advice?

. What does your ordinance say about chickens? If it doesn't specify no rooster you might be able to get away with it. It's also a good idea to occasionally treat neighbors with fresh eggs. They seem less likely to complain when they're benefiting from something too.
