New member here from Maine. My 15 Buff orpington chicks will arrive from cackle hatchery May 17!
My mom had chickens (along with ducks, turkeys, pigs, and cows) on her farm but that was after I had moved out of the house so I have no real experience with them. She has given me a lot of advice, but whatever I learn here can only help, right?
My intent is to raise chickens to supplement our food with both eggs and meat. 5 or the chicks I ordered are cockerels, 10 are pullets. I plan to put most of the roosters in the freezer by winter to make more room in the coop for the hens during the cold months. I'll probably keep one rooster because I want to try hatching my own chicks next spring.
I look forward to learning as much as I can here!
