HI, I'm Becky, new to raising chickens, in my adult life (we had them when we were kids, along with rabbits, and a family of goats). DH and I have been mulling over raising our own layers for eggs ever since we had our first roadside purchased, farm-fresh eggs, about 2 years ago. I went to the local Agway today to see what their order times were for chicks, and turns out they put in their order tonight at end of business, so if I was going to order chicks, I best do so now! Well, that made my decision pretty easy, either order right now, and just take the plunge, or wait another year, because all the online places are on wait lists or sold out right now. SO, after asking a customer, and the guy at the desk the best breed for temperament, when it comes to my kids helping with the chores, I decided on 6 Ameraucana chicks, that will be here in about 6 weeks. hmm... I better get moving on brooding box, and my coop eh? Found a shed today for cheap, will be picking it up later next week, and I've been doing a LOT of reading about protection. We are rural, but still a sub-division, with conservation land in front and back, so there is a known hawk, fox and coyote presence, and lots of field mice. I'll be surrounding the entire coop with a 6' tall mesh pen. So that's my story in an eggshell.
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.
Without having to make them from plywood, what do people use for other kinds of nest boxes?
Thanks all!
