Hi I am a fairly new chicken mom, i have a hen and a rooster. i thought i'd start slow with two hens but one turned out to be a rooster. they are about 16 weeks old now. my rooster has suddenly turned into a meanie! we are trying to show him whos boss, hopefully this will work because i don't want to have to give him away as we are already attatched to the little meanie :) someone said we should get more hens for him, would this make a difference? would greatfully accept any advice.

thanx for the replys :) can i just add hens? i mean will the they be accepted by the ones i already have? and should they be the same breed? or does it not matter.

I don't know, I don't think it matters...they will establish a "pecking order" so to speak and it'll all work out. I'd get at least 2 more. Plus, this sounds mean, but it works. If you can get a hold of your rooster and hold him by his legs (he'll be upside down, hanging) let him hang that way for several minutes. Some really hate it and you have to coerce them into the hanging position...some go limp and quiet...but when you turn them right side up, they'll be calmer. I saw my grandma always do this and my dad done it. It works!! My dad had a MEAN turkey that always attacked him. He took him, flipped him upside down and held him by his legs for about 30 min. I don't see how on earth it could hurt them! That turkey NEVER pecked my dad again. What you are doing is showing the rooster or turkey or whatever, who is boss...and it's YOU! You are bigger and stronger. They realize that afterwards and calm down. I do it with my hens if they get feisty and they calm right down.

It doesn't really matter what breed, but you do need to get your roo more hens. Just don't forget to quarantine first! Good Luck!
