Hello There, We are new homeowners and looking to build a coop this summer and get some chickens. My sister has had hers for several years now and we have seen the joy her family get from their chickens. We are currently looking in to just how many we can have in our area. We have just under an acre, but our property is on the side of a VERY steep hill and so we are having to work out just where to put the coop.
Our property is narrow and close to neighbors, any recommendations on some of the quieter breeds? LOL

hi and welcome

from my experience some quiet breeds are rhode island reds, barred rocks and black australorps. but it really depends on the chicken whether they are more quite or really loud

Welcome to BYC!

Most hens are fairly quiet, with the exception of the egg song. As long as you don't keep a rooster, your neighbors shouldn't be all that bothered by a few cackling hens.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Be sure to check out the Coop/Run design section and Coops forum for ideas www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-amp-run-design-construction-amp-maintenance
Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds in general the bigger heavier breeds / brown egg layers are going to be quieter than the light breeds / white egg layers, the occasional girl may be a talker but hens in general aren't really noisy compared to roosters.

Thank you! I hope they don't mind them, but we're still going to get them any way :)
