Hi- I am new to raising my own chickens. I decided to get a few baby chicks for the kids for Easter and then reiase them for eggs. I got 4 Rhose Island Red chicks from Gebo's just before Easter (2012).
I assumed they were sexed as there was no sign like there was at Tractor Supply- but a couple of weeks into it, I started seeing that I had at least 1 rooster (dominant and developing a large red comb). Then it looked like another one was leaning that way too (we are waiting to see which team he decides to play for ;-) ), his/her comb is not as big or red, but still much more prominent than the other 2 hens.
I am having a large mobile coop built and will soon move them from the smaller temporary coop to the permanent one- but they will still be allowed to roam the fenced yard during the day.
I am sure I'll have questions, but I will post them seperately. Glad to be a part of this community!
