Hi, I am getting ready to build a chicken pen for our family. We have had chickens on the family farm all my life but this is going to be a little different. I am wanting to try to set it up for automatic opening/closing for free ranging while teaching them to come back also. I'm planning to get some egg layers as well as meat chickens. The main reason I'm jumping on this now is my little boy is wanting to set it up. While he is excited and wanting to jump in, I'm going to do what I can to make it happen!

Welcome to BYC nick, super glad to have you here! I have a friend that does the automatic, and my advice is to set it 30 to 45 minutes after dark, because her chickens have gotten locked out at night before! But I think they are useful because it does get annoying pretty quick to go close them up.
