Hello, I'm Mike. My wife and i are the proud new owners of four laying hens, we think they are either production reds or cherry eggers. They have been laying around an egg a day since we got them home. My wife wasn't too thrilled about getting them but now has fallen for them. I was around my grandpa's chicken flock as a youngster, but i never expected hens to be so well behaved and easy to care for. The only problem we've had is getting them to lay in the nest. We plan to try the golf ball or plasic egg method.

A little about us: we are both in the medical field, but circumstances have found my wife out of work for now, so we are trying to cut down on food costs. We are avid gardeners, we have had a bumper crop of tomatoes this year and my wife has been very busy canning, making spaghetti sauce and salsa. We dream of being totally self sufficient and someday going off the grid as much as possible. We live in town without a fenced in yard so we are using a chicken tractor for now, with plans to expand to a full size coop later, maybe with more hens (hint hint

) My wife hopes to start a small garden nursery and seed business sometime later this year, and we also want to start a small fruit/vegetable farm and move to the country where i was raised.

Anyway, it's good to meet everyone, and i hope we can learn and contribute. This looks like a great forum and community.

Welcome from Wisconsin! I actually live on just shy of 1/2 an acre "in town", and I am making plans to convert about 1/3 of that space into garden. I have plenty of room out front to plant some fruit trees, and maybe add a couple of bee hives to the far back corner of my long and narrow lot. I, too, would someday like to live off grid-probably won't happen till I hit retirement age, though.
